Proven Record in Health & Safety

27th November 2013

SCX Special Projects Ltd has been recertified by SafeContractor, a leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises high standards in health and safety management amongst UK contractors.

After gaining independent SafeContractor accreditation in 2012, SCX Special Projects has been re-certified by SafeContractorthis year when it was able to prove its increasing commitment to achieving excellence in health and safety.

The auditing process examines a company’s track record for safe practice, its health and safety procedures and processes, and how they comply with current health and safety legislation, including such practices as working at height, use of powered machinery, manual handling and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).

The standards were raised this year, with the company having to provide much more in-depth evidence of its working procedures, including; training records and proof of higher levels of job specific training provided; more supporting evidence of compliance with fundamental health and safety requirements (Risk Assessments, Method Statements, Lifting Plans, etc.); and more emphasis placed on demonstrating the dissemination of information and advice by the company’s ‘competent persons’.

Dave Kilner, the SCX Group’s Quality Assurance Manager said: “Accreditation is more than simply having the written procedures in existence; SafeContractor expects demonstration that these procedures are being used effectively throughout the organisation in order to ensure the safety of not just its employees, but its clients as well. Health and safety is very important to the SCX Group, and this gives us the opportunity to prove that.

“The fact that that the standards increase every year ensures continuous improvement and allows us to demonstrate our ability to adapt, to grow and to improve the long-term future of all Group companies and our relationships with clients.”

Under the SafeContractorscheme, those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users via a website. Client-organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database, enabling them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. These clients agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation.

John Kinge, Technical Director of SafeContractor said, "Major organisations simply cannot afford to run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies in place."

"More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that SCX Special Projects has done. The firm’s high standard has set an example which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector.”

Over one hundred and seventy major nation-wide businesses, from several key sectors, have signed up to use the scheme when selecting contractors for services such as building, cleaning, maintenance, refurbishment or electrical and mechanical work.
