Sheffield based SCX Special Projects is a highly profitable business which started life over 30 years ago. It designs, builds, commissions and maintains bespoke engineering solutions to complex lifting and moving challenges for structures, materials and people for its customers in the nuclear energy, defence, aviation and kinetic architecture sectors.

Its highly-talented team of 60 has a global reputation having delivered numerous iconic projects in nuclear energy at Sellafield and Dounreay, retractable roofs for Wimbledon’s Centre Court and No. 1 Court, the world’s first dividing and retractable pitch at Tottenham Hotspur FC, on-board systems for the HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carriers, advanced production line handling and test systems for Rolls Royce engines and F-35 Lightning jets, and many others.

With the backing of its investors Elysian Capital the business is implementing a strategy which will see significant domestic and international growth.

As a part of this growth plan SCX Special projects is currently looking for ten new members of its engineering, operations and HR teams. The teams will continue to grow over the next few years.

 

Job Summary

Responsible for delivering all EC&I designs by effective management of the EC&I design team the EC&I Department Manager will also provide technical guidance, governance and impart knowledge to EC&I designers.

Principally this is a design delivery role from an EC&I and technical perspective, working across a multi-disciplined project team.

About You 

Essential

  • Degree qualified in a relevant EC&I based discipline

  • Systematic, methodical, exacting, quality and service driven attitude

  • Delivery focussed mind-set, proven track record of working to tight deadlines

  • Demonstrable competence gained in a EC&I design and delivery role, ideally from a highly regulated industry. This could be from but is not limited to the Nuclear, Defence, Pharmaceutical, or Oil & Gas sectors

  • Team leadership: approachable, organised, collaborative, communicative, directional, target driven

  • Up to date knowledge of current Health and Safety Legislation including CDM Regulations

  • Sound commercial awareness to support business decisions, for example, budget assessment of the proposed designs

  • Knowledge of machinery safety (BS EN 13849) in line with the Machinery Directive

  • A full UK driving licence is essential for this position as travelling between offices/sites may be required

  • Willingness to undergo security clearance if required

 

Desirable

  • Leading a technical team within a professional project delivery environment

  • Integration knowledge of field devices such as laser positioning systems, absolute encoders or resolvers, speed transducers and safe access systems

  • PLC/HMI programming skills

  • Knowledge of functional safety design regulations (IEC 61508 IEC 62061)

  • Knowledge of Amtech cable calculation software

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Management of the Group’s EC&I and Safety related design projects

  • EC&I lead for the business

  • Preparation of accurate estimates of work for programming

  • Requirements capture

  • Close liaison with client and project team, understanding the scope of supply

  • Preparation of conceptual and scheme designs

  • Development of designs to satisfy technical specifications

  • Checking and approving design calculations of engineers

  • Lead of EC&I and Safety based design reviews along with provision of EC&I engineering support to project design reviews (risk assessments/ HAZOP’s etc).

  • Ensure quality and delivery of design documentation throughout the design process including scope of works, method statements, risk assessments, design substantiation, functional design specifications, functional safety assessments, technical files and related technical documentation to comply with design standards, safety legislation/regulatory requirements and the needs of the client

  • Allocation of work to other members of team in order to ensure delivery of design to quality, time and budget

  • Selection, strategy and management of work to sub-contractors

  • Keep abreast of codes and standards that the company is working to

  • Document key design decisions, undertake analysis and systems level testing to verify the performance of your team’s design and to validate that the customer's requirements have been met

  • Liaise with customers designers and engineers e.g. human factors &, reliability, to ensure the EC&I engineering solution meets the design intent

  • Managerial responsibility for all members of the EC&I department including appraisal, performance management and disciplinary where required
