The mechanical handling expertise at SCX Special Projects is increasingly in demand by the aerospace, nuclear and defence industries, however it is most widely known for its work on the two concertina roofs at Wimbledon, and the world-first retractable pitch at Tottenham Hotspur’s new London stadium.

Mike’s new appointment as Chief Engineer brings new breadth and depth to the engineering design team at SCX Special Projects. In particular, he brings a wealth of knowledge of nuclear decommissioning, which continues to be a key market for the business.

His connection to SCX Special Projects goes back to 2009, where he worked on a nuclear crane that the company had installed for the MSSS project at Sellafield. His work on significant and ground-breaking projects such as the silo B38 nuclear decommissioning systems at Sellafield will help the business play a greater role in this demanding sector.

Mike began his career as a student engineer with Aveling Barford, starting a path that led via Philips Scientific and BOC to him starting his own engineering firm in 1995. He provided engineering design and analysis services to a broad range of industrial clients, specialising in advanced CAD, CAE and CFD disciplines. This took Mike into new and exciting sectors, including work for Jordan F1, Agfa, London Underground, GE, Rolls-Royce and the Ministry of Defence.

In his new role as Chief Engineer, Mike takes on several responsibilities, including guiding the design teams at SCX Special Projects, improving processes and quality measures, and fulfilling a client-facing role. His main objective is to ensure that the business delivers best-in-class, safety-critical handling solutions for the aerospace, nuclear and defence sectors.

Mike says: “Even after 30 years as an engineer, I’m increasingly enthusiastic about what more can be achieved. Engineering and delivering precise, huge moving structures is an endeavour that brings both great satisfaction and a huge responsibility.

“People call on SCX Special Projects when their mechanical handling challenge cannot be met by usual means. It’s my job to empower our engineers, to broaden our capability, and to deliver exactly what our customers need.”
