Role Overview

  • The Project Manager provides leadership, direction and management of all assigned projects to ensure achievement of project success factors, which are:

    • Projects completed on time

    • To the agreed specification

    • To the highest levels of quality commensurate with industry and commercial proposal

    • Achievement of, and ideally improvement of handed over budget performance in accordance with all SCX health and safety requirements and HSE legislation whilst meeting or exceeding our customers’ expectations

About You 

Key Skills/Experience



  • Demonstrable track record of successfully delivering engineering projects meeting equivalent project success factors

  • Demonstrable experience delivering projects in either Nuclear / Oil & Gas / Manufacturing / Process / Power Generation industries

  • A relevant degree (or equivalent) in an Engineering discipline or proven and significant experience of working within an engineering company

  • Demonstrable understanding of relevant engineering standards, Health & Safety, CDM & CE Regulations

  • Demonstrable Experience of working with differing levels of responsibilit

  • Awareness of NEC & JCT commercial contracts administration.

  • Willing to undergo security clearance to a minimum of SC.


  • Experience of working within the Mechanical Handling sector including overhead cranes, materials handling, moving structures

  • Experience of working within the Nuclear Decommission or MOD sectors

  • Experience of running FAT & SAT (Factory and Site acceptance tests)

  • A relevant Health & Safety qualification such as NEBOSH, SMSTS, Safety Passport, CSCS.


The Role in Detail

Project Timing Plan Responsibilities

  • In accordance with company policies and procedures, organise and attend hand-over meetings alongside Sales and Engineering to ensure that new projects are handed over effectively with all relevant documentation to achieve project success factors
  • Hand-over pack produced and meeting minutes to be recorded
  • Liaise with Operations Director and other key members of the mechanical and EC&I engineering teams to initiate new projects
  • Identifying required levels of resource to ensure project success factors are met
  • In accordance with company policies and procedures, prepare a Contract Programme (P6 or MS Project), which must include the following basic benchmarks:
  • Milestone dates for document deliverables
  • Date approval required
  • Invoicing milestones and cash flow forecasts covering the duration of each contract
  • Production and testing periods
  • Date materials required on site
  • Completion date
  • Date required for receipt of full and final information
  • Through regular communication, ensure the Project Programme is maintained
  • Programme changes, slippages, requests, and new client instructions must be communicated in writing, with copies retained on the job file
  • Issues which could adversely affect the performance of a project are to be notified to the Commercial Manager and Operations Director prior to notifying the client
  • By active management of the Project Plan ensure resources assigned to projects remain in line with project timing plan requirements, pre-emptively identifying and reporting risks to the achievement of the plan
  • Revision of the plan commensurate to keep all stakeholders fully informed of developments and in accordance with contractual agreements


Administration Responsibilities

  • Read and understand the Contract Terms and Conditions
  • Read and understand the Job Specification
  • Understand the scope of the job and what has been allowed for in the tender
  • Manage the project cost against the estimate, and bring any overspend concerns to the attention of Operations Director and/or the Commercial Manager, through the company’s observation reporting and PSR reporting functions
  • Take control of the job budget, checking that all purchase requisitions for materials and site services are within cost budget, and suggesting ways in which savings can be made
  • Generate enquiries indicating; specific requirements, applicable standards and any special considerations, stipulating the quotation return date and delivery date as required
  • Where necessary, raise purchase orders for approved suppliers, taking into consideration both quality and value (competitive prices required for all enquiries unless agreed by the Commercial Manager or Operations Director)
  • Issue Project Status Reports (PSRs) on a monthly basis to the Operations Director and Commercial Manager, ensuring the information is correctly compiled and identifies, all financial movement, risk and programme compliance.
  • Attend a monthly project review with the Operations Director, and if necessary, the Commercial Manager, to review the performance of individual projects, to present the status of the project (as in the PSR) and to identify and agree a corrective action if required
  • Ensure SCX Design Risk Assessments (DRA) take place at the appropriate times and liase with the design departments to ensure designs are in compliance with DRA’s
  • Review and approve purchase orders within approval level against project specification and budget
  • Maintain close contact with the Design Team, ensuring all drawings are checked and signed off, and meet the required specification
  • Control all job variations, ensuring these are costed, instructions are received from the client and they are presented for payment on a monthly basis
  • Ascertain the Contract Payment Schedule, including the dates for payment applications, and ensuring financial deadlines are maintained
  • Liaise with the Accounts Department to ensure monthly invoices are raised on time, that retention percentages are known, and the dates for retention release are recorded
  • Assist the Accounts Department in the collection of due debts, by ensuring jobs are completed, all snagging carried out promptly, and works are signed off by the client


Worksop and Site Responsibilities

  • Comply with all Health and Safety, Risk Assessments and Method Statements, ensuring compliance with company policies and HSE Regulations
  • Attend client design and co-ordination meetings, ensuring minutes are taken and actions tracked
  • Organise suitable labour resource (including sub-contractors) for all workshop build and site install activities
  • Liase with Workshop Manager to ensure all plant and labour is utilised efficiently and cost effectively
  • Organise necessary site plant and equipment
  • Control on site QA in line with company policies and procedures.
  • Organise site surveys as and when required
  • Ensure sign-off of all works is in compliance with SCX requirements
  • Ensure sign-off by the client, either directly or through the Sub-contractor, as appropriate
  • Sign-off of Sub-Contractor invoices before payment by Accounts Department.


Other Duties and Responsibilities


  • Co-ordinate with the Project Team and other departments as necessary to achieve project success factors

  • Arrange ‘kick-off’ meeting with the client (issue agenda) and clarify project details (minutes to be recorded)
  • Ensure that there is parity between client expectations and ‘as sold’ criteria
  • Identify and resolve any issues to the satisfaction of Special Projects and its clients
  • Establish lines of communication with the client and ensure minutes are recorded for all meetings with the client
  • Liaise with the Engineering and Design Teams to ensure that the designs solution achieve project specifications
  • Effectively plan and organise project resources, to ensure all deliveries are made to the correct location, manufacture is done efficiently, and that suitable, competent personnel is available when required
  • Deliveries and works on site must be properly organised with the client to ensure project success factors are met
  • Health & Safety is paramount in all that Special Projects do. All projects must be carried out in a safe manner ensuring that Health & Safety policies of Special Projects and HSE regulations are satisfied at all times
  • Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Health & Safety Plan documentation must be compiled with the appropriate input, and issued to the relevant people as necessary, to ensure works are carried out safely, and without incident
  • Any issues must be pre-emptively identified, reported to senior management in accordance with HSE Regulations, and resolved swiftly to avoid incident
  • Ensure Quality Control objectives as laid out in the company Quality Manual are met at all times
  • Any other reasonable request by senior management
