SCX Team Enters Final Phase of Training for Yorkshire Marathon

13th September 2016

A team from SCX are ramping-up their training in the final weeks before this year’s Yorkshire marathon. The three-man team; Darren Bunker, Michael Harrison and Daniel Salthouse, are taking part in the event to raise money for the ‘Make it Better Appeal’ at Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital.

The team is looking to raise at least a thousand pounds which will be used by the appeal to pay for special facilities at the hospital that go beyond its NHS funding.
SCX make final preparations for the Yorkshire Marathon
Darren Bunker is a Design Engineer at SCX Special Projects and says he’s really pleased to be helping raise money for such a good cause. “I’ve done some cycling and other running events, including two previous marathons, so I know how important it is to get the training right.” He added, “I’ve been doing a combination of short fast hilly runs and long distance sessions, and in these last few weeks I plan to gradually build up to the final distance.”

Michael Harrison has only recently joined SCX after eight years in the Army where he served in the Coldstream Guards. Now he works as a Control Systems Engineering Technician. He said “I’ve always loved running. I like to push myself and beat my own times. I’ve never done a marathon before, but I’ve been doing lots of training including building up my general fitness by completing the coast-to-coast walk and I’m also a keen wakeboarder.”

He added “During these final few weeks I’ll be increasing the number of runs I do and I’m planning to run around the Derwent Valley reservoirs, which I think will be about  sixteen or seventeen miles.”

Caitlin Hallatt, Community Fundraising Assistant at The Children’s Hospital Charity said; “We’re so proud of everyone at SCX running the Yorkshire Marathon for us. Every step they take will help make it better for young children at Sheffield Children’s Hospital by funding two new physiotherapy rooms in the new hospital wing. We’d like to wish them the best of luck with their final preparation and all the best for race day.”

As part of the fundraising for the Children’s Hospital Charity, SCX has sponsored one of the Elephant’s in the ‘Herd of Sheffield’ which have been on display around Sheffield since July. The SCX Elephant is on Devonshire Green.

Daniel Salthouse, who is the Engineering Manager at SCX said “My daughter has helped to paint one of ‘The Herd’ and I want to impress her by also joining in the fundraising effort, albeit far more painfully!”

He added “My daughter has also been a patient at the Children’s Hospital and so that’s given me added motivation to get involved, and to raise as much money as we can for such a good cause.”

Can you help Darren, Michael and Daniel make it to their fundraising target?
