SCX Spinners Road Cyclists 2013 SCX Spinners MTB team 2013

Following an arduous but ultimately enjoyable weekend, the two groups completed their respective challenges.

The road cyclists completed Coast-to-Coast on the first day in 6hrs and 20min and back again on the second in 6hrs 45min!

The Mountain bike team completed their Coast-to-Coast in a total of 11hrs (9hrs 10min riding, plus breaks) across the two days.

Congratulations to both teams.

A number of photos from the event can be viewed on @TheSCXGroup's Twitter page.

The challenge raised over £7,300 for the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, so thank you to everyone who donated. See the Just Giving page for more info.

The SCX Spinners are planning an even bigger and bolder charity challenge for 2013.SCX Spinners 2012

Following last year’s successful Coast-to-Coast cycle ride from Whitehaven to Whitby in just two days, this year SCX’s band of mad cyclists are setting their sights on Coast-to-Coast & Back!

In August 2012 Darren Bunker, Danny Pickard and Johnny Stephenson successfully completed the 160 mile challenge across the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors in a total of 12 hours across the two days (see pics). They were ably assisted by John Hill in the SCX support vehicle and John Biggin undertaking outrider duties. This summer though, John Hill has decided he will don his own Lycra and get fit enough to join Danny and Johnny in cycling from Sunderland to Carlisle, and back again! – A total of 208 hilly miles over just two days. The group has also grown to include Sales Engineer Duncan Randall, Maufacturing Inspector Paul Netherwood and Simon Eastwood, the Group MD.

Not to be outdone, a group of their off-road cyclist colleagues plan to ride a more scenic Coast-to-Coast route from Silloth, Cumbria to Tynemouth, Northumberland on mountain bikes. Craig Mullen, Mark Foster, Danny Towers, Kenny Gould, Dan Salthouse, Nick Hewitt, Robinn Walsh, James Eastwood, Rob Vickers, India McKellar and Rachael Nolson aim to ride Coast-to-Coast along cycle paths, single track roads and some tricky off-road sections, closely following Hadrian’s Wall for 105 miles, across the same weekend. SCX SpinnersThe plan is that the two pelotons will meet up at the end in a pub in Tynemouth. Who will get there first?

But Coast-to-Coast & Back is about more than just bravado. Last year Danny, Johnny and Darren raised more than £2600 against an initial target of £500 for The Western Park Hospital Cancer Charity. This year the aim is to do even better for this worthwhile charity.

The challenge is due to take place across the weekend of 10th and 11th August 2013, but preparations have already begun and training is generally going well (although Duncan doesn’t have a bike yet!)

“It was a privilege to be involved last year” says John, “even though I only gave a supporting role. “Watching the lads pursue the challenge was a great inspiration and the reason I have opted to join them this year, as well as hopefully in years to come.
“The training is tough, being the oldest in the group at 52, particularly since I have very little serious cycling experience. However, I’m more than confident that I can finish strong; the thought of the charity and people’s generous donations should be motivation enough to keep us going.”
