Raising the Standards at Dover Harbour

Street CraneXpress Ltd are off to the sea-side!

Not because they’re taking a break… far from it. Thanks to SCX’s mechanical handling experience and resources, they have been awarded the job of helping Dover Harbour Board update the cranes on their Ro-Ro ramps.

The ships that dock into Dover Harbour are Ro-Ro vessels; which means “roll-on/roll-off". They have built in ramps to allow their cargo to be wheeled on board rather than lifted by cranes. As the ships move into the dock to be loaded, they are protected by special cushioning clamps, and therefore because these clamps are subject to large impacts on a daily basis, they require regular replacement. So, whilst the Ro-Ro ramps negate the need for cranes to lift cargo, the client cannot escape the requirement for cranes to remove these clamps when they need replacing.

Built into the main frame of the overall structure, the 2.5tonne cranes need to meet new UK standards and be fit for working in a marine environment. In order to achieve this, they now require upgrading. Rather than entirely replacing the now sub-standard hoists, SCX propose to refurbish the equipment in order to save the client a significant amount of expenditure.

The refurbishment will include updating the cabling to U.K. standards, updating the coating to Marine Environment standards, and updating the seals to be fit for the marine environment.

To ensure that refurbishment fully meets the client’s requirements, SCX will hold in depth consultations with the client on site and keep them fully informed as the work progresses.
