Street CraneXpress complete Wimbledon Centre Court

Street CraneXpress (SCX) have completed the engineering of the new 5,200 square metre retractable roof over Wimbledon's Centre Court that was finished in May ready for Wimbledon 2009.

During the five year project SCX have designed and installed the mechanical systems and control technology, as well as weatherproofing and drainage equipment for the folding fabric concertina roof. The roof is flexible, meaning it can be folded into a compressed area when not in use and translucent, so that the Centre Court has an "open" feel even when the roof is closed.

The roof has been designed to close in under ten minutes. After the roof has been closed, play can resume in approximately 20 minutes depending on climatic conditions allowing almost unbroken coverage of play on every day.

A lot of the SCX employees attended the test event that took place at Wimbledon on the 17th May. At the event there were exhibition matches featuring Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Tim Henman and Kim Clijsters. Within centre court 15,000 people witnessed the roof in motion.
