Job Summary

The Senior Control Systems Design Compliance Engineer will enhance the existing control system department in order to deliver best in class designs and operational excellence to our clients. Working collaboratively with the client and other Control System Design Engineers to achieve compliance with both project specifications and mandatory contract standards is the key focus for this new role in the department.

A key part of this overall deliverable is to ensure compliance can de demonstrated through the generation of appropriate documentation such as Design Substantiation Reports, Compliance Matrices, Safety Validation Reports etc and that other contract documentation and drawing deliverables are in line with these top level documents.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Understanding of customer specifications and individual project control system requirements in order to be able to identify/clarify any contract scope of supply issues
  • Where variations to contract are identified, provide technical and commercial justifications for the changes to the Project Manager
  • Familiarity with key industry and British Standards to be able to identify/clarify EC&I design compliance
  • Where any non-compliance is identified, provide mitigation for such non-compliance and substantiated alternative design solutions
  • Produce Design Substantiation Reports to demonstrate how the departments EC&I designs meets the specified client specifications and safety functional requirements of projects
  • Produce Compliance Matrices to demonstrate compliance/non-compliance with client specifications and relevant British Standards
  • Working to the Project Program to ensure allocated work milestones for the control system design and supply elements of the contract are achieved
  • Produce Basis of Design Specifications (BoD) for review with the Controls Dept Manager and contract Project Manager and/or client for comment/approval before the electrical design commences
  • Produce Functional Design Specifications (FDS) for the contract and keep updated as the control system design develops such that the FDS can be used as a design verification document
  • Produce Software Design Specifications (SDS) for the contract, if required, and keep updated as the control system design develops such that the SDS can be used as a design verification document
  • Produce Factory Acceptance and Site Acceptance Test documentation
  • Produce electrical schematic drawings for the control system using AutoCAD Electrical drawing package
  • Produce control panel General Arrangement drawings using AutoCAD Electrical drawing package
  • Produce control system cable schedules using AutoCAD Electrical drawing package
  • Produce control system PLC/SCADA/HMI software as required for the project
  • Peer review and approve control system drawings, software and design documents produced by other SCX Electrical Design Engineers and/or subcontractors, where required, in accordance with SCX QMS
  • Involvement in Control System and multidisciplinary Design Risk Assessments
  • Peer review control system designs to ensure they are in compliance with the contract specifications and incorporate design elements identified during Design Risk Assessments
  • Conduct electrical control system design review meetings with the client and/or internally, as necessary, and minute accordingly if the Project Manager is not in attendance
  • Follow SCX Special Projects QA procedures to ensure control system works as designed and supplied to the requisite technical quality standards
  • Health & Safety objectives must be satisfied at all times whether activities are taking place in the office, workshop or on site.  Specific standards include HSAWA 1974, LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998, CE Marking Directive 1998, and CDM Regs. 2007, Manual Handling Regs. 1992, etc.  Note this list is not exhaustive – see quality procedures for complete list.  Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Health & Safety Plan documentation must be compiled with the appropriate input and issued to the relevant people as necessary
  • To meet Quality Control objectives as laid out in the SCX Quality Manual.  All relevant Procedures must be followed to ensure Customer Satisfaction and achievement of SCX objectives

Qualifications and experience required:

Essential

  • Degree qualified in a relevant technical/engineering discipline and/or 10 years’ experience in the design of electrical control systems
  • Good technical documentation authoring skills
  • Understanding of key industry and British Standards
  • Ability to generate electrical schematics and general arrangement drawings using AutoCAD Electrical package
  • Knowledge of leading PLC/HMI suppliers (e.g. from Siemens, Rockwell, Group Schneider)
  • A full UK drivers licence is essential for this position as travelling between offices/sites will be required
  • Up to date knowledge of current Health and Safety Legislation including CDM Regulations

  • Knowledge of Machinery Safety Design and Regulations (BS 13849-1) and use of SYSTEMA machine safety verification package
  • Knowledge of Functional Safety Design and Regulations (BS EN 61508, BS EN 62061)
  • Knowledge of Variable Speed Drives
  • PLC/HMI programming skills
