Ascot Racecourse has committed itself to improving the quality of its race meetings through improving the quality and safety of its racetrack. Achieving this would mean eliminating the hazardous access roads carving through the racetrack, which would normally involve the construction of road bridges and/or underpasses.

Ascot commissioned the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI), World leaders in turf technology to create a standalone section of turf track, to be deployed during a race meeting to seamlessly cover the access roads, hardwearing enough to withstand the hooves of galloping racehorses, but light enough to be moved into and out of position. Street CraneXpress Ltd were commissioned to develop the mechanical means of manoeuvring the turf platform with exacting precision.
